About this plant

Dutch iris, commonly sold as Iris x hollandica, is a group of bulb-grown hybrids used for seasonal flowers. It is botanically and horticulturally different from rhizomatous Siberian iris and from Alaska's native iris, Iris setosa.

Uses

Best uses and placement

  • Pots near entries, sunny beds with drainage, and seasonal flower projects
  • Growers who want buds to open after the plant is home
  • Well-drained containers or beds
  • Orders where another flowering plant can be added as a similar free plant

Growing notes

Growing conditions

  • Give Dutch Iris sun and drainage. Wet heavy soil shortens the life of bulbs and roots.
  • Keep the pot evenly moist while buds are building, but do not keep it swampy.
  • If you transplant it, move the whole root ball and disturb it as little as possible.
  • After bloom, let the leaves keep working while they stay green. That foliage feeds the bulb.
  • In a pot, treat it as a seasonal plant unless you have a protected place to hold it after bloom.

Plant health

Problems to watch for

  • Color cannot be selected from this mixed-bulb batch.
  • The selling season is April through June; plants are currently out of stock.
  • Flopping can come from wind, shade, or a pot drying too hard.
  • Do not cut green leaves back just because the flowers are done.
  • Bulbs rot in saturated soil. Drainage matters more than rich soil.

Current condition

Check before pickup

  • Whether the April through June batch is open for orders
  • Whether buds are visible on the available plants
  • A current photo of the 1 gallon pot
  • How to hold the pot if it cannot be planted the same day

Order process

After you place a request

  • We send photos and full updates as orders are prepared.
  • Every order includes free similar plants matched to what was ordered.
  • Pickup and delivery timing are confirmed before plants leave the greenhouse.
  • Use the order notes for timing, substitutions, pot size, and whether the plant is going indoors, outdoors, or into a greenhouse.
