About this plant
Corn, Zea mays, needs warmth, strong sun, and a long enough season to form ears. A 1 gallon start gives the plant more root and leaf mass before transplanting, which matters in Eagle River where nights can stay cool well into summer.
Uses
Best uses and placement
- Warm garden beds, large tubs, or protected rows with full sun
- Small block plantings where wind pollination has a better chance
- Growers who want corn without starting seed indoors
- Sites where water and wind protection are available after transplanting
Growing notes
Growing conditions
- Plant corn in the warmest full-sun spot you have. Cold soil slows it down.
- Set plants in a block if possible. Corn pollinates better with neighbors than in a single straight line.
- Water at the root zone. Shallow watering makes shallow roots.
- Feed once plants are actively growing. Corn uses a lot of nitrogen during vegetative growth.
- Shelter tall starts from wind until new roots anchor them.
Plant health
Problems to watch for
- Transplant shock shows up as stalled growth. Keep the root ball intact and water it in well.
- Purple or dull leaves can come from cold roots as well as nutrient stress.
- A single corn plant is mostly a novelty. Several together have a better chance.
- Late cold snaps can set corn back quickly. Cover plants if the forecast drops.
