About this plant
Dahlias are frost-tender tuberous plants grown for summer flowers. Dwarf forms stay compact, regular dahlias cover a wider range of heights and flower forms, and dinner plate cultivars produce the largest blooms and usually need the most support.
Uses
Best uses and placement
- Dwarf plants for porch pots, entry planters, and compact spaces
- Regular dahlias for sunny beds, larger containers, and cutting gardens
- Dinner plate dahlias for large flowers in a sheltered, supported site
- Choosing a plant by current height, flower form, and known bloom color
Growing notes
Growing conditions
- Give dahlias sun, steady water, and a pot that is not tiny.
- Check pot weight before watering. Wind can make the plant look thirsty even when the root ball is still wet.
- Remove spent flowers to keep the plant working on new buds.
- Protect from frost. Dahlias are not frost-proof.
- If the plant is tall, give it shelter or a small stake before wind bends the stems.
Plant health
Problems to watch for
- Dahlias can wilt after a rough move. Water them in and give them a calmer first day.
- Yellowing near the bottom can come from crowding, wet soil, or older shaded leaves.
- Do not bury stems deep like tomatoes.
- If you want to keep tubers later, ask about that before the season ends.

Check before pickup
