About this plant

Cuban oregano, Plectranthus amboinicus, is not true oregano. It is a tender, thick-leaved aromatic herb in the mint family. The leaves hold water, so it should be grown more like a succulent herb than a soft annual herb.

Uses

Best uses and placement

  • A larger aromatic plant without waiting for a small start to fill out
  • Bright indoor rooms, greenhouse benches, and sheltered summer containers
  • Taking several cuttings while keeping a full parent plant
  • Moving into a wider pot where the branches have room to spread

Growing notes

Growing conditions

  • Use bright light and a pot that drains. Dense wet soil is the main problem with this plant.
  • Let the top of the mix dry before watering again. The thick leaves store water.
  • Pinch growing tips to keep the plant fuller.
  • Bring it indoors before nights get cold. Treat it as tender in Alaska.
  • Cuttings root best when the plant is actively growing and the stem is not soft from overwatering.

Plant health

Problems to watch for

  • Soft stems near the soil line usually mean too much water or a cold wet pot.
  • Weak pale growth means it needs more light.
  • Leaves and stems can bruise or snap during transport.
  • The flavor is strong. Use small amounts first if you have not cooked with it before.

Current condition

Check before pickup

  • How wide and branched the current 1 gallon plants are
  • Whether the plant has been outside or kept protected
  • A photo of the exact plant being held
  • Whether a smaller 3 inch plant would be better for the available space

Order process

After you place a request

  • We send photos and full updates as orders are prepared.
  • Every order includes free similar plants matched to what was ordered.
  • Pickup and delivery timing are confirmed before plants leave the greenhouse.
  • Use the order notes for timing, substitutions, pot size, and whether the plant is going indoors, outdoors, or into a greenhouse.
